Also commonly known as gas springs or gas stays, gas struts are used in a wide variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, and medical equipment manufacturing. Common everyday items which include gas springs are height adjustable office chairs, windows and doors, and car hatchback supports. Gas springs can even be found in heavy industrial works, where the largest of these devices are capable of exerting pressure of up to 40 tonnes.

Unlike traditional springs, which use the energy produced by compressing their coil to push up or outwards, gas springs are operated by compressed gas, which is typically held in a contained cylinder. A sliding piston is then used with the cylinder to control the energy it contains. Gas springs react to the pressure that is exerted upon them and operate with a characteristically smooth motion, which allows them to extend and then retract as needed.

Gas struts are available in a wide variety of specifications, which means that there is sure to be a device which will be suitable for any application.
