Gas struts are an essential yet often overlooked piece of engineering that makes lifting, lowering, and holding objects a breeze. Whether it’s the boot of your car, the lid of a toolbox, or an industrial hatch, gas struts provide the necessary assistance to ensure movement is smooth and controlled. But how exactly do they work?
At their core, gas struts—also known as gas springs—operate using the principles of compressed gas and hydraulic damping. Each strut consists of a sealed cylinder filled with nitrogen gas, a piston rod, and hydraulic oil. The gas inside is under pressure, creating a force that pushes against the piston, which in turn extends the rod outward. This controlled expansion counteracts the weight of the object being lifted, making it feel significantly lighter.
