Latch systems and catches are mechanical devices that are used to secure or hold objects in place. Latch systems and catches are found in cabinets, containers, doors, and some machines. They are useful for ensuring correct alignment, restricting access, or adding an extra layer of security.

Latch systems are designed to hold or fasten two objects securely together while allowing for controlled separation and movement. They have two main components: a latch mechanism and a keeper/receiver which is fixed and holds the latch in place. The most popular applications for these systems are doors, cabinets, gates, machinery, and vehicles.

There are a significant number of different types of latch systems, notably spring latches, sliding latches, and locking latches. Spring latches are common on gates and doors and utilise a spring to hold the latch in place. Sliding latches have a bolt that moves either vertically or horizontally in order to hold the door/gate closed and are often used together with a padlock. Locking latches are often used to secure gates, doors, cabinets, safes, or equipment. They combine fastening ability with a secure locking mechanism. They often also have components that prevent accidental release or unauthorised access.

Catches are far simpler than latch systems and tend to rely on magnetic force or friction to keep the door closed. Unlike latching systems, catches do not usually have a locking mechanism. The most common types are magnetic catches, often found in cabinets, and ball catches, commonly seen on furniture doors or lightweight main doors.
