Keys

Keys are an essential part of everyday life. There are two main categories of keys: those used for unlocking, and those that are used in machinery.
Keys for unlocking are usually physical, although they can also be digital, and are designed to release locks and thus grant access to secured spaces. Traditional physical keys are cut to fit into a corresponding lock. They are able to unlock it by manipulating the tumblers or pins that are inside the lock itself. Common examples include house keys, car keys, and padlock keys. Other types of traditional physical keys include skeleton keys, which are able to bypass internal mechanisms and open various different locks, and tubular keys, which are commonly used for bike locks or vending machines.
Electronic keys include key fobs, biometric keys, and NFC/RFID keys. Key fobs work by emitting a signal that instructs the lock to open, biometric keys use facial recognition or fingerprints to unlock, and NFC/RFID keys use either near-field communication or radio-frequency identification to unlock doors when they are tapped on or waved over a sensor. Some phone Apps can also now be used as keys.
Keys that are used in industrial settings are very important. They will usually rotate two parts, enabling the transmission of movement and force. Examples of machines that utilise keys include machine tools, motors, and manufacturing equipment. These keys can have a rounded or straight end, or one of each. Other types include gib head keys and Woodruff keys. Most industrial keys are made from carbon, stainless steel, brass or bronze. In industry, keyed locks are preferred to other types of fasteners due to their robustness, stability, durability, and high torque transmission.
